It is in our opinion that pups before four months old are too immature to desex. Traditionally it was recommended to be done between five and six months, however in more recent years and based on scientific evidence, the RSPCA and many veterinarians are recommending that dogs be desexed before they reach puberty, which for some dogs is as early as four months. This is best discussed with your chosen vet.
Unfortunately, pup’s bladder and bowels are not mature enough at 8 weeks to retain their waste. The ideal time to start training is 12-16 weeks. You can certainly start training at 8 weeks by designating one spot as the ‘puppy toilet’ with puppy pads, newspaper or a fake grass pad. And treating/praising pup if they do their business in the allocated area. Taking pup outside regularly is also vital in successful toilet training.
